Things To Do
Antiquing - We southerners love our antiques. Just drive through town and you will find several antique stores. Every small town in Western NC and NE GA has plenty of antique stores for you to find that vintage piece you just can't live without....If you're like me, there may be several pieces you can't live without :-)
Art - Do you love art? Murphy has a monthly Art Walk Spring through Fall in downtown Murphy. Please visit the Calendar of events for dates.
ATVing – Yes, we love our jacked up jeeps and 4 wheelers :-) Rain around here means better crops and more mud to play in :-) Having a private place to ride your ATV is one of the many advantages of owning your own land in the mountains. For those of you who don't have a private place to ride, don't get too discouraged, there are several places you can go. Durhamtown Tellico.
Boating – Murphy's main lake is Lake Hiwassee. Lake Chatuge, Nottley, Nantahala, and Blue Ridge are all just a short drive and all have public boat ramps. If you need to rent a boat, check out the local marinas. Shook's Marina. Mountain View Marina.

Camping – I'm a country girl, so I love to camp in one of our many USFS camp grounds. My favorite is Fires Creek in Hayesville, NC. I actually love it so much, I got married in there and camped for my honeymoon :-) It has campgrounds for tents, campers, and also horses. There are several other USFS campgrounds around. Car Shows – For all you muscle car fanatics like my husband, there are plenty of car shows around keep your engines running :-) Murphy and Andrews have one annually. Please check out the calendar of events for dates. Also, one of my favorites is the MoonShine Festival in Dawsonville, GA every Fall. You can take bring your vintage car for a moonshine run or simply enjoy the entertainment. It's family friendly and all the proceeds go to charity.
Casino – The Harrah’s Cherokee Casino is on schedule to open in Fall 2015 right here in Murphy, NC. Harrah's is now hiring, so if you want to relocate to Murphy, NC and you need a job first, this could be your chance.
Farmer’s Market – every Saturday on the square of downtown Murphy local farmer and craftmas sell all kinds of things; fruits, veggies, crafts, honey, etc. It's a great time to check out the shops on the square and meet people as well.
Fishing – My husband and son love to fly fish so we live in the perfect place; we are totally surround by good trout waters. Popular spots to fish are Lake Hiwassee, Nottley River, Hiwassee River, Valley River, TellicoRiver, Davis Creek, Fires Creek, and on and on and on. For an interactive map, check out this link. Flea Markets – We have 3 Flea Markets in town. The Tuesday Flea Market is open on, you guessed it, Tuesday mornings and is located across from McDonalds in Murphy. , The Decker’s and Foster’s Flea Markets are open on the weekends and are located at the 19/129 and Hwy 64W intersection. Check out the Junk Man's Daughter's booth in Foster's. I always find something I can't live without in her booth.
Festivals – They are everywhere and year round. Fall festivals are definitely a must! Fall. John C. Campbell Folk School Fall Festival, Heritage Day Walk, Sorghum Festival, Apple Festival, Moonshine Festival, and so many more.
Flying – The Western Carolina Regional Airport is located between Murphy and Andrews. Call for more information. 828-837-5527
Golf – Golf, golf, everywhere. There are several courses within 30 minutes of Murphy. Cherokee Hills in Murphy, The Ridges in Hayesville, Brasstown Valley in Hiawasse, GA, and Old Union in Blairsville, GA. Several of the resorts offer amazing restaurants and spa services, so be sure to check out the links....Whether you are looking for a day in the spa or on the green, you will not be disappointed :-)
Gym – The town of Murphy has it's own fitness center and pool. Check out the website for hours, rates, and classes. Hiwassee Valley Pool & Wellness Center.
Hiking - Enjoy the world renowned Appalachian Trail! We also have lots of smaller trails throughout Cherokee County and the surrounding area. Call the Forest Service Station and find out where you want to take your next hike 828-837-5152.

Horseback Riding – I was raised with horses and riding through the woods on a summer day is an experience I will never forget. Even if you don't have your own horse or any riding experience, you can take a guided horse trail ride through the mountains with Horseshoe Creek Stables.
Hunting – My hubby and son's favorite season is hunting season. Talk to the locals or contact NC Wildlife Resources Commission to find out where to hunt. Just make sure if you are on someone else's land you have permission :-) This is really a perk for owning your own piece of mountain real estate.
Motorcycle Riding - There is no better place to ride than these mountain roads. Every pretty weekend, we get on the Harley and head out. In any direction you are guaranteed to enjoy the views of the mountains, waters, and there are waterfalls everywhere. One of the most popular rides it the Tail of the Dragon listed below.
Mountain Biking – We have an abundance of trails for mountain biking all over the US Forest Service Land.
Museum – Cherokee County has its own museum you can check out! Located right downtown, you can learn about the history of the area and so much more. It’s worth the trip to check it out. Call them for more details at 828-837-6792.
Music - Who doesn't like music?? Live music can be heard all over the area. The John C Campbell Folk and Young Harris College are both places that offer excellent concerts just about every weekend. Trisha Yearwood actually attended Young Harris college, so their music department is top notch. Also, many local restaurants offer live music, Shoe Booties Cafe, The Daily Grind, and Chevelle's. Also Doyle's Cedar Hill Restaurant has an outside patio with live music seasonally.
Paintball - So much fun!!! My son had is birtday party last year at Ol Town Paintball, off Hwy 294, and I highly recommend it.
Panther Top Tower – The fire tower opens seasonally and the view is amazing.

Racing – We have a local dirt track located just a few minutes from downtown Murphy. Races are held just about every weekend during the racing season. The little boys in my family can't wait for the next annual demolition derby and monster truck rally. Get more info by calling 828-837-3815.
Real Estate – That's were I come in :-) As a local I know so much about the area and I know the real estate market just as well. Owning your own piece of land has so many advantages.
Restaurants – With no restaurant chains other than fast food, Murphy's local restaurants are way above par! We don't have a bad restaurant in town, but of course, I do have my favorites. My top picks are; Doyle's Cedar Hill and Blue Mountain Cafe, which both offer organic proteins and locally grown vegetables, Italian Deli, Pierro's pizza is heavenly and the meatballs and canollis are to die for, Monte Ablan Mexican Restaurant where even their chicken soup is the best you've ever had, and Rib Country if you want hearty meat and yummy yummy yummy fried apple pie.
RV – Want to enjoy the mountains in your RV? We have a KOA and several more scattered around. There are also several campground that are on US Forest Service land. I actually got married in the campground at Fires Creek!
Shooting Range – The US Forest Service has a shooting range open to the public on Panther Top Road. Hwy 64W, Rt onto Hwy 294. Rt on Panther Top Road, all the way to the end, rt on the gravel road. Equiped with benches and you’ll see it a mile or so in). It’s an outdoor range that’s covered and complete with a handgun range, rifle range (up to 100 yards), benches, and more.
Shop – Downtown Murphy offers a wide variety of shops; clothing, hunting, bakery, antiques, home decor, and much more. Just outside the town square are furniture, hardward, jewelry, and feed stores as well. If you're looking for the mall......look under 2 Hours From Anywhere.
Spelunking - The Lost Sea in Sweetwater, TN is a short drive from Murphy, NC and offers a fun day for the entire family. Walk through the cave down to a underground lake. If you want a little more adventure you can schedule a private spelunking tour through part of the cave not seen on the regular tour. My son did this for his birthday and every inch of him was covered in dirt, but he had a blast.
Swimming – Manmade or natural, we have several option for swimming. Hiwassee Valley Pool & Wellness Center has a gym, pool, and fitness classes. There are several local lakes, and rivers you can swim in as well.
Thrift Stores – They are all over and there is no telling what gems you will find in them.
Train Rides - Blue Ridge Scenic Railways. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. My family's favorite time to ride the train is around Christmas when the train becomes the Polar Express to the North Pole.
Tubing – A great way to relax for all ages is to float downstream on a tube. We like a rent an extra tube with a bottom and pack cooler and for an average of $5/tube it's an inexpensive way to enjoy nature. Great tubing locations are in Helen, GA, Deep Creek in Bryson City, and McCayesville, GA only about 30 minutes from Murphy.
Waterfalls – Any day trip can include 1 or 2 stops to see a waterfall. They are everywhere. Before you venture out, check out the waterfall map link to see which waterfalls you will pass along the way. Western NC Waterfalls.
Wine Tasting – Got Wine? We do....and lots of it. There are vineyards all over the tri state area and the wine is yummy! Check out Cherokee County’s winery – Calaboose Cellars. Clay County's Eagle Fork Vineyard has great wines, weekly live music, and offers tours for wine tastings to other vineyards, as well as tours to Harrah's Casino in Cherokee, whitewater rafting, ziplining, and much more. It's a one stop shop. Also the Biltmore Estate Winery is just a 2 hour drive to Asheville, NC.
Whitewater Rafting – Mild or wild, take your pick. We have 2 whitewater rivers in our area. Nantahala is the milder of the two, but still tons of fun. Let me warn you, the water is COLD!! Jump off Picnic Rock and you will understand what I'm talking about! The Ocoee River is much wilder. This is the where the 1996 Olympic were held. Both rivers have several rafting companies to choose from.
Yard Sales – Spring through Fall there are plenty or yardsales to be found.
Zoo – The King Kong Zoo is located in Murphy. It's located on Hwy 19/129 right beside the Flea Market and has 60 animals including tigers. 828-837-4242 If you would like to visit a larger zoo, see my 2 Hours From Anywhere page.
