Swain County lies in the most western area of North Carolina, and includes a large portion of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, as well as other vast undeveloped forests. Only 13% of the land in Swain County can be conveyed due to the large amount of property either owned by the federal government or being held in conservancy.

The area is an outdoor recreational paradise. Swain County is  home to Fontana Lake which is the largest lake East of the Mississippi River, and due to stringent development restrictions, offers a mountain lake and wilderness experience unlike any other. Swain County also offers hiking throughout the Nantahala National Park, Deep Creek National Park and the Great Smoky Mountains. The Appalachian Trail also cuts a path through Swain County and follows on through into Graham County and beyond.  A novice or skilled  mountain biker can enjoy Tsali Recreation Area which is rated among the top 10 places to ride in the United States. Swain County is also home to the Nantahala River. Here one can enjoy whitewater rafting , kayaking and  fishing. Swain County is also the central station for the Great Smoky Mountains Railway which runs through much of the county's parks and scenic byways. From here one can enjoy a day long excursion or a dinner train. On special dates the ever-so famous "Wizard of Oz" and the "Polar Express" make their way into Bryson City.  Fishing is at it best in Swain County, whether it be lake or one of the many trout streams, you are guaranteed  a pleasurable experience.

The best "little" city in the nation, Asheville is only slightly more than an hour away, and is home of the world renowned Biltmore Estate and Grove Park Inn.
