Nantahala Bank & Trust Company In early 2004, a group of local investors realized the need for a locally owned community bank to serve the needs of Macon County and the surrounding area. After completing a detailed feasibility study and obtaining the services of veteran Macon County banker Russell F. Gale, the Nantahala Bank and Trust Company opened it doors for business on October 4, 2004. The community responded quickly to the idea of a locally owned and operated Bank and deposited $4,000,000 during the first full month of operations. News of this success spread quickly and in late December the bank was approached about bringing its special brand of Community Banking to the citizens of Clay County. By March 2005, the required applications were filed and approved and our first branch office opened to an enthusiastic reception in Hayesville, NC. In 2007, we opened a full service branch in Murphy, NC. We’re extremely proud of how much we’ve accomplished since 2004. It’s the direct result of the tireless efforts of our talented, experienced staff and the overall success of our lending activities. As a true community bank, we appreciate the support we continue to receive from our friends and neighbors in Macon, Clay, and Cherokee counties. Nantahala Bank and Trust Company is a full service bank that combines the latest in technology with the friendliness of the community bank experience. So, drop by our office today, visit with our enthusiastic group of professional bankers and experience real community banking at its finest.

Mountains surpassing 5000 feet, cascading waterfalls, towering hardwood forests and whitewater foaming over the backs of boulders--these are the sights awaiting you in the Nantahala National Forest. Enjoy the panoramic views from Whiteside Mountain or Wayah Bald. A 2-mile loop trail to the top of the Whiteside cliffs, provides a spectacular view. Wayah Bald is especially beautiful in June when the azaleas and laurel bloom. Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, with it's 400-year old trees, is another breathtaking sight, as is Whitewater Falls - the highest falls east of the Rocky Mountains.
